University of Greenwich

University of Greenwich traces its origins to 1890 and gained university status in 1992. The University serves more than 25,000 students and employs around 2,000 staff across three campuses. Known for its industry-focused teaching and applied research, the University of Greenwich maintains strong links with employers and organisations in the UK and internationally.
As part of wider activity in strengthening work on Race Equality, University of Greenwich set up its Race Equality Self-Assessment Team (SAT) to lead this process. The team reviewed policies, challenged culture, and pushed progress under the Advance Higher Education Race Equality Charter framework, and members recognised the need for clearer guidance on the law. The team commissioned Watershed to deliver a training course for the Race Equality SAT on tackling microaggressions and to be able to recognise the implications and address staff behaviours.
Watershed designed and delivered targeted training for the SAT. We ran two three-hour in-person sessions. We explained the legal framework under the Equality Act 2010 and showed when workplace behaviour crosses the line into racial harassment or unlawful discrimination.
In the sessions, we explored how microaggressions arise in everyday interactions. We discussed unconscious bias, workplace banter, and subtle exclusion, using real examples to bring the issues to life. We shared practical steps that help staff challenge behaviour early and respond with confidence.
The training also examined recruitment processes. We discussed positive action, advertising roles, and fair interviewing practices.
The session helped the SAT deepen its legal understanding and sharpen its approach to race equality. We helped the team link everyday behaviour with legal risk and practical action. The University have secured a Race Equality Charter award.
Clear advice. Practical tools. Better conversations about race at work.
