Straight answers to help you decide

We know joining a new firm is a significant decision, especially if you are leaving a traditional law firm model behind. Here are answers to the questions we are most often asked by experienced employment solicitors considering a move to Watershed.

How does pay work?

Our lawyers are salaried employees, not contractors. You will receive a competitive base salary, reviewed annually, along with discretionary bonuses. There is no fee split model and no pressure to ‘generate your own work’, we are not a platform model.

Is there a route to equity?

We do not have an equity partner structure. Some of our senior lawyers have taken on statutory director positions, which come with additional responsibilities and influence. Progression at Watershed is real, but it is not tied to title or tenure.

What kind of clients will I work with?

Our clients include major employers such as Four Seasons Healthcare, Hugo Boss and others in healthcare, logistics, manufacturing, retail and more.

Many relationships come through our partnership with Collinson Grant, giving us access to C-suite and board-level work throughout the UK.

Do I have to do advocacy?

No. Some Watershed lawyers do advocacy and enjoy it; others prefer to focus purely on advisory or investigations work. There is no expectation either way.

How do teams collaborate?

Collaboration is informal but effective. We are in regular contact via calls and joint meetings. The culture is open, lawyers freely share second views, draft-checks, and strategic input. There is no work hoarding or internal competition.

What support is there for development?

You will grow through the work itself: complex, senior, and varied, as well as through peer support and informal mentoring. If you want structured learning or to explore a new area, we will back that too.

Can I apply speculatively?

Yes. Even if there is no advertised position, we are always open to hearing from the right kind of lawyer.
